In its second consecutive year, the New Faces 2024 initiative continues to shine a spotlight on 10 emerging talents in the regional music scene. Led by esteemed regional festivals and conferences – MENT Ljubljana (Slovenia), Kontakt (Serbia), SHIP (Croatia), and PIN Music Conference (North Macedonia) – this initiative highlights ten dynamic and motivated music professionals. Hailing from the former Yugoslav countries and all under the age of 30, these individuals have significantly influenced both the local and broader music landscape.

Initiatives like New Faces 2024 play a pivotal role in providing youth with invaluable networking and educational opportunities within the regional music space. As articulated by the initiative partners, “The music scene comprises not only the performers on stage but also numerous behind-the-scenes contributors, including event promoters, journalists, publishers, managers, and various hidden participants in the music business.”

The response to this year’s call, concluding in December 2023, was overwhelming, with over 80 applications received. Festival partners meticulously selected the ten most outstanding individuals, who will be rewarded with tickets to regional conferences and festivals, exclusive access to online delegate databases, and full coverage of travel and accommodation expenses at partner conferences abroad.

A resounding roll call of fresh talent from the Balkans and music professionals from all over Europe, BALKAN:MOST Festival, in cooperation with WOMEX, brings 6 headliners, 24 showcase bands and a 3-day conference to Veszprém’s picturesque venues. Dubioza Kolektiv, Marina Satti and jazz maestro Daniele Sepe entertain the crowds at free open-air concerts while 200-plus experts of the world music scene convene in Veszprém, European Capital of Culture 2023 between 7 and 9 September.

Bringing new discoveries and moving beyond stereotypes, BALKAN:MOST strives to pay dues to a region of rich heritage and bustling energies long misrepresented. It’s a pioneer event in scope and relevance – never before have Balkan bands stepped onto the stage in such numbers and variety at a single festival. Never before has a professional event attracted this many participants convened for the cause of the region’s music. Crowning MOST, the four-year project led by Hangvető and co-financed by Creative Europe, the festival showcases fresh regional talent. It provides a bridge or stepping stone to wider markets.

The birthplace of brass bands, crossroads of peoples and cultures, home to natural and cultural treasures, the Balkans have been predominantly perceived through heavy-handed stereotypes. Organised by Hangvető, within Veszprém’s ECoC framework, BALKAN:MOST offers a truer, current and diverse encounter through music, the most potent agent of cross-cultural communication.

Rebellious, like Dubioza Kolektiv, spirited and sensual like Marina Satti, bohemian as in La Caravane Passe, full of bouncy joy like Barcelona Gipsy balKan Orchestra and enticing, just as Daniele Sepe’s pieces, music displays all the region’s manifold colours, and then some. Have a go at Bosnian blues, aka sevdah, experience neofolk, gipsy hop or upland electronica, check out gigs by Bulgarian Oratnitza, interpreters of Bosnian sevdah Divanhana, get lost in the woods with Macedonian Perija at 30 gigs on 3 open-air stages in the Veszprém Castle and City Center.

MOST references the Slavic word for bridge and stands for the four-year-long project revitalising the region’s music industry, co-financed by Creative Europe. The unprecedented undertaking was led by Hangvető, who invested over 4 million euros in elevating regional artists and building connections, partnerships and new joint initiatives with the rest of Europe. The conference in September will summarise and extend the projects’ efforts while providing another opportunity to showcase regional talent.

In cooperation with one of the major international platforms of world music, WOMEX, the 3-day conference discusses the strengths and challenges of the music industry in the Balkans, with plenty of workshops and networking opportunities. Veszprém, with its top-notch venues and picturesque location, proves a generous host in its European Capital of Culture title year. Adding to the city’s musical life and heightened buzz, BALKAN:MOST brings a multitude of flavours unmissable for professionals and audiences alike, for anyone curious about this rich yet largely unexplored region.

For the first time ever, the new regional initiative NEW FACES 2023 has selected ten promising young music professionals (under the age of 30) who are actively involved in the music industry of the former Yugoslavia region. The selected ten have already made a big impact in their local and wider musical environment, and are very motivated in their work, which is already showing results.

With this open call, which received over 100 submissions, the festivals and conferences MENT Ljubljana (Slovenia), Kontakt (Serbia), SHIP (Croatia), and PIN Music Conference (North Macedonia) aim to provide an incentive for young professionals, who are crucial for the growth of the regional music scene.

“We hope that the NEW FACES initiative will become a yearly event. By offering young people the opportunity to further develop their knowledge and skills, we also give meaning to our work. We often forget that the music scene isn’t only about performers we see on stage, but also about many others who work diligently behind the scenes. This includes event promoters, journalists, publishers, managers, and many other sometimes-hidden protagonists of the music business,” say the festival partners.

The ten selected young music professionals will receive tickets for regional conferences and festivals, access to online delegate databases, as well as covered expenses for travel and accommodation at partner conferences abroad.

She works as an editor and journalist for Glazba.hr, the only Croatian music platform covering music of all genres, styles and forms.

Stanislav Drča (curator, concert promoter, producer; European Capital of Culture Novi Sad 2022, KC Lab, RS)

Stanislav began to dive into curatorial, managerial and production waters only a few years ago when, together with his colleague from the Academy of Arts in Novi Sad, they got the opportunity to establish an independent cultural centre in a modernist villa in Novi Sad, today known as Cultural Center LAB (KC Lab). His artistic practice soon began shifting into curation of exhibitions and other happenings such as concerts, hybrid events, artist in residence programmes etc. Soon after, he took up the opportunity to start working at the European Capital of Culture Novi Sad 2022 as a curator and producer. Having no formal education in the field of production and management, he learnt everything on the go.

Dino Grgurić (concert promoter; Velvet Festival, HR)

A walking music archive since the age of 12, Dino organised his first concert at the age of 16. He is co-founder and art director of Velvet Festival which introduced 200+ international artists to the island of Krk. Lana Bauman (concert promoter; Lacha, SI)

Lana Bauman is the executive producer of Lacha, a company dedicated to working with upcoming artists who show a higher quality of work. Established in 2020, Lacha has already organised more than ten mini festivals, including concerts and jam sessions, and collaborated with some of Maribor’s leading cultural institutions to co-produce some of the city’s biggest festivals and events. By creating events that have a supportive system and bring together artists, audiences and organisers, Lana is helping to foster a vibrant and thriving music community in Maribor.

Luka Zadro (manager, booking agent, concert promoter; yem, HR)

Luka Zadro is one of the cogs in the local and regional music industry machine. He started his amateur-professional career as a concert organiser in KSET and during this time organised various programs and concerts, becoming increasingly involved with the alternative scene. After completing his studies, Luka continued his journey in the music industry by working at a concert and festival organisation agency, as well as managing bands and music publishing. He currently collaborates with bands such as Porto Morto, nemanja and Prazna Lepinja.

The HEMI Music Awards (HMA) 2022 have reached the finish line and the art-rockers from Romania, Zimbru, are the big winners!

The announcement of the HMA 2022 winner took place at PIN Music Conference on 25 November at HEMI Dinner in MKC (Youth Cultural Center) where Zimbru received the “cup” and were the first act to open the Showcase evening at the Dancing Hall ’25 May’ in MKC .

Zimbru is an indie / art-rock band from Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Their sound can be described as a wild mix of raspy synthesizers, angular guitar riffs, and lively percussion all topped off by stories of dancing, lost pets, real love, and nostalgia for never experienced past decades.

After a fruitful year of collaboration through 32 mentoring sessions, networking events, 9 online workshops, and live performances at 9 leading European Conferences, Showcase and Festivals such as MENT, Tallinn Music Week, Athens Music Week, EXIT, Mastering The Music Business, Reconnect, Budapest Showcase Hub, Tak Brzmi Miasto and PIN Music Conference, Zimbru are getting ready to perform at the Eurosonic Festival (ESNS) on January 2023!

On top of that they are also honored with a total prize value of € 5,000. The nature of the HMA Prize affirms a shared commitment to helping emerging artists to break through in Europe and beyond.

The annual awards are designed to accelerate the international careers of upcoming European acts through a training program, networking events and live touring in leading showcase festivals around Europe.

Each year, 27 outstanding nominated artists from 9 European countries from Central and Southeastern Europe (Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia) are eligible for HEMI Music Awards. All nominees in each phase as well as the award winner are selected by an independent international Jury of 27 members including Industry experts, festival organisers, promoters, export offices, venue managers and music journalists from the 9 countries participating in the Awards.

But HMA is not only for the winner. All nominees are offered the opportunity to attend training sessions to develop their skills as well as networking events to be prepared for an international career, while the 9 HMA finalists are on top of that offered access to HMA touring programme, a total prize value of € 2,000 per nominee.

Moreover,  by getting nominated in HEMI Music Awards, artists increase their visibility and boost their bookings such as AΙΚΟ (CZ), Danai Nielsen (GR), KOIKOI (RS), Pantaloons (SI) and Vera Vice (EE) who are among HMA artists to perform at ESNS 2023!

Stay tuned! HMA 2023 Open Call is just around the corner!

It’s our great pleasure to announce the German music program on PIN TV!  With the support of the German Embassy in Skopje, PIN TV will be enriched by three super-cool musical talents:

Shelter Boy: When he started out Shelter Boy was often called the German Mac Demarco but he soon developed his very own distinct style and blends dreamy guitar sounds with raw King Krule style vocals. The result can be classified somewhere between indie-rock and dream-pop. In 2019 Shelter Boy has performed at several big festivals in Germany (Artlake, Immergut, Rocken Am Brocken, …) and has opened for Gus Dapperton, Yakob Ogawa, and Omar Apollo.

Ätna: Germany’s most exciting newcomers! The German alt-pop duo ÄTNA paint with such broad strokes with their sonic pallet that over the past few years their work has brushed the corridors of jazz, electropop, and neo-classical. Ätna have already played high profile festivals throughout Europe & performed in cities as diverse as Istanbul and London. Like Fever Ray meeting Grimes in London’s Royal Opera House, Ätna focus their shows around the piano, with analog sounds mixed in directly with loops, effects, and delays.

Guacáyo: Cheeky pop sounds merge with reggae, dub, and hip-hop and merge into fresh Indie music. Hamburg based band Guacáyo creates a connection from you to me and from beat to feet. The songs are bursting with a desire for freedom and longing, celebrate independence.
