I’m a musician, organizer, record label operator, compilation curator, freelance booking agent, and independent postdoctoral researcher in analytical philosophy, living between Budapest and Ankara. I run the boutique label Inverted Spectrum Records which releases experimental rock, urban folk, psychedelia, avant-jazz, synthesizer music and outsider music, often in the form of thematic compilations published exclusively on Bandcamp for free download, with a regional focus on Turkey, Hungary, and Serbia. A core mission of the label is to increase the visibility of intriguing and edgy musical acts that are unrecognized outside their local context or which are, in some cases, almost completely obscure.
So far, Inverted Spectrum Records has featured a wide range of bands and artists including The Cyclist Conspiracy, Klotljudi, Lenhart Tapes, Hotel Makedonija, Crno Dete, Klopka za Pionira, Decolonize Your Mind Society, Gentry Sultan, Bujdosó Trió, Dorota, Qiyan, Ak’Chamel, Attic Ted, DAK, and Anadol.
A long-running project by the label is “The Music of the Secret Society that Owns Belgrade“, a series of compilations that aims to document and promote the most unique acts from the underground scene in the Serbian capital; each release is followed by a festival, which began as a single-day event in 2018 and grew to a four-day phenomenon in its fourth edition, organized in a do-it-yourself manner without relying on any funding or even an organizational team.
A recent album from Inverted Spectrum Records is “The Underground Jazz Scene in Budapest Today: An Adventurous Introduction“, the very first compilation of its kind, and the release of which prompted me to start to organize events also in Hungary, and also to take up the role of a booking agent for an improvisational formation consisting of Péter Ajtai, János Bujdosó, Ádám Czitrom, and Attila Gyárfás, four musicians central to the Hungarian alternative jazz scene.
I’m a founding member and the drummer of Hayvanlar Alemi; we’re a psychedelic folk rock band established in Ankara in 1999, and we have published on a variety of labels such as Glitterbeat, Subsound, Unrock, and Sublime Frequencies.
